About Hearing Tribunals and Complaint Review Committees

CCOA regulates the chiropractic profession in the public interest. A key part of CCOA’s mandate is the complaints process, which includes hearings and complaint reviews.

A Hearing Tribunal or a Complaints Review Committee is formed, as needed, from rosters of regulated chiropractors appointed by CCOA and members of the public appointed by the government. At least 50 per cent of a Hearing Tribunal or a Complaint Review Committee must be public members; the remaining members are regulated chiropractors.

A Hearing Tribunal considers evidence and argument in adjudicating a charge of unprofessional conduct against a regulated chiropractor. The tribunal makes findings and determines sanctions for unprofessional conduct.

A Complaints Review Committee reviews complaints that were dismissed by the CCOA Complaints Director. The committee determines whether to uphold the dismissal or other direction, as permitted by the legislation, such as referring the complaint back to the Complaints Directors for further actions.
